What Members Thought

As I read this book, I had to keep reminding myself that the book was non-fiction. This family was real. These people brought up their children this way. Based on what I knew aobut the book, I thought I was going to abhor Jeannette's parents. I didn't. I found them quirky and unconventional. Yes, they should have had their children taken away from them for abuse and neglect. And yes, it appalled me that people seemed to turn a blind eye to the way the children were living. A heartbreaking story. I had to keep reminding myself that this was a true story that the author had decided to share. Throughout the book, I kept going back and forth in feeling sorry for the kids and the parents. The parents could have truly turned things around so that their kids had food on the table but it always ended up being a choice. The kids had to grow up very quickly and take their lives in their own hands. If they hadn't, who knows how the story would have turned out?
