Another wonderful Russo novel about small town folk who scrape out a living after the demise of the industry around which the town was built. There are many themes in this novel from how we are shaped (and sometimes crippled) by the experiences of our youth, our families (we may become our parents more than we think or like), classism and racism in small town America and how that further restricts our apparent freedoms to shape our own lives.

In his first novel since the Pulitzer Prize
I'm glad I stuck with this book through the end. (I was in the unfortunate position of attending the Extreme Readers' discussion without having finished the book.) Now of course I wish I could ... Everyone seemed to agree that Bridge of Sighs would have benefited from a more agressive edit - but I am glad to be introduced to Russo's writing (and eventually plan to read his Pulitzer Prize winner, Empire Falls). A very well written story of childhood friends in a small town and the ebbs and flows of friendship over 60 years. My first Richard Russo, but far from my last. I'll even read this one again.
