I dont know how to review this book it just doesn't seem to be defined well. It reads as a well written classic such as Jane Eyre in a similar time period. It is clever in its use of footnotes to go along with a fictional tale that makes you believe it is non-fiction. But somehow fitting that into a fantasy tale about magicians in 1800 England was hard to balance for me through all 800 pages. Now this is my dream of what a fantasy book should be. Brilliantly diverse characters, never failing sense of humor, mysterious and beautifully vague magical elements all wrapped up in a masterfully managed alternative history. I finally finished it. It was a struggle. There were places that were wonderful but more places that it was not.
