A story of survival after the world has been desecrated. A man raising his son alone on the road … tries to reach the coast … hopes for clear seas. Father and son face insurmountable odds and bond through trials. The boy is probably aged 5-9 (?) and never knew the world before now- burnt, gray, and evil. My daughter chose this as her contemporary novel selection for an AP Lit class, and I'd always meant to read it, so I decided to join her. Wow.
I've read two of the three Border Trilogy novels, and I am awed by McCarthy's writing. This one was as affecting as the others.
Dark and eerie, yet constantly thought-provoking and emotionally charged, The Road got under my skin, in the back of my mind, and haunts my thoughts. The moment I finished, I knew I would need to read it again. ...more

I don't think I appreciated The Road until I finished it. The images of this dark journey haunted me for days afterward. Any book that can make you feel anything with such intensity is a success.
