Critics had divided reactions to Lionel Shriver's latest novel (after the Orange Prize?winning We Need to Talk About Kevin, ***1/2 Sept/Oct 2003). Though most considered her use of the dual narrative a clever literary device, not all agreed that it worked. Some found the alternating storylines confusing, while others were bored by the exhaustively catalogued details of Irina's everyday life. The Post-Birthday World doesn't provide easy answers to the questions it raises about relationships. Irin

I give this book 4.5 stars (reason I didn't give it 5 was that it was so well written that it gave me a feeling of sadness the whole time as I was immersed in the world of mostly unhappy characters). Very realistic characters - similar to the film \"Sliding Doors\" but without the humor) in that it describes 2 completely different outcomes in the central character's life based on one decision. The premise is interesting and engaging. The format (alternating story lines by chapter) could be confusing, however Shriver executes this well. Overall, worth reading and entertaining. The novel does drag a bit in some places - the daily to- dos of the main character are somewhat over done.

Entertainment Weekly picked this as its favorite book of the year. I don't agree, although it is a good read. It's a story about a woman who has a chance to cheat on her husband with their friend. The book then describes what would happen if she does and what would happen if she doesn't. Which man would give her a better life? You'll have to read it to find out. ...more

DNF 35 pages. I just couldn’t get into this at all - it was moving too slowly and I didn’t care much what happened to anyone so I decided to move on.
