I was disappointed in A Mercy after reading many good reviews. This was the first Toni Morrison book I had read and I did not feel this particular book lived up to her reputation. The manner in which the story was told, from no fewer than 6 different perspectives, made it incoherent and difficult to follow. Jumping back and forth in time through so many characters grew frustrating. It was hard to develop any kind of relationship with the characters because of this technique and because the book ...more

The writing in this novel is hauntingly beautiful. I appreciated chapters being told from the perspective of different characters and the overlapping of time and events. Through the story-telling, I was able to fully appreciate the psychological deterioration of the characters. The final chapter, as heart-breaking as it is, brought the novel full circle. While this chapter answered questions and provided an explanation, it is this chapter that made the novel hauntingly beautiful as well as heart ...more

I felt like I should have really liked this book, but I just did not. I found the writing very confusing and difficult to read, the switching of persons narrating was especially hard to follow. I also felt the book was just to short, I never became invested with any of the characters, they were all very one dimensional and dare I say, rather boring. Sadly, this one just wasn't my cup of tea! ...more

This is the first time in a long time that i wished a book was longer. What a gift - to make characters so interesting that you need more information, more details, more time with them.

this one was hard for me to get into but when i did i couldnt stop. gorgeous writing. it wasnt my most favorite toni morrision (Sula) - and i think it was because of the time period and the religious aspects, but I still really enjoyed it.
