My copy of The Postman is battered, well-read, and much loved. It's a movie tie-in Bantam paperback that I found at a used bookstore, the pages ever so slightly yellowed, the cover worn, its top corner ever so slightly curling up in a dog's ear. It fits perfectly with the atmosphere that David Brin creates. This is not a book to be treated delicately or reverently; it is meant to be read, re-read, enjoyed, and explained.

As good fiction, and science fiction, is wont to do, The Postman made me thi

I enjoyed the first two parts of this very much. The first part covers serendipitous discovery of an old uniform by the main character, Gordon Krantz, just when he needs it after his camp has been raided and all the gear he needs for survival taken. The second part involves the way he becomes a symbol, at first without meaning to, and then the way he builds up a movement around himself, making his lies a reality.

Good, solid, post-apocalyptic science fiction. It was written in the 1980s, when this sub-genre became maybe a little too popular, possibly to the detriment of sci-fi as a whole. Set mainly in an Oregon reduced to isolated farming communities, the better first half follows the main character's journey through the remnants of civilization in the guise of a mail carrier. Eventually the forces of evil and barbarism arrive for a somewhat typical showdown between two end-of-the-world-views, elevated ...more

An extremely cinematic book. I can totally see why Kevin Coster wanted to make it into a film. I am equally glad I didn't see the film as the book gets a little complicated at times wiht some of the bad, unspoken, complicated choices we humans make... and why. Those are internal struggles that are hard to film when making a grand film, like Costner is wont to do. Anyhow, the book was well-worth the read. I enjoyed it immensely. One of the best post-apocolyptic/dystopian books I've read... and I ...more
