This is a serviceable fantasy that I plodded through. I liked the settings and descriptions - Scathach's dojo, Hekate's tree, the mix of characters from mythology, all very cool. But the story never grabbed me, I never had trouble putting the book down.
I think it suffers from a lack of focus - since we don't follow just one character, we don't get much character development, and so we don't care very much about what happens to them. And I was disappointed that we didn't get to a natural break in ...more

I remember rereading some of Michael Scott's earlier novels last summer and feeling disappointed. They just didn't hold the magic I'd seen in them when I was younger. I don't know if these books would or not, if I was younger, but my first comment on The Alchemyst was "I'm so far unimpressed", and I could close the book with the same feeling, too. I don't really care enough to hunt down the next book, not while I have so much else to read.

Look, I know the writing is clunky and the kids read more like twelve-year-olds than the fifteen-year-olds they’re supposed to be. I know the story jerks about in stops and starts. I know Nicholas Flamel is a terrible role model and these kids should not be emulating him.
But. But.
I still really enjoyed The Alchemyst. And this is one of those times I’m glad I tend to wait a day or two before writing my reviews, because I figured out why it was so enjoyable: it’s like the Saturday morning cartoons ...more

The writing is just so clunky! I'm trying to get past it and go with the story, but it needs to stop assuming I'm totally dumb and explaining everything to a child. I can see every step the author is making and it bothers me. Not a smooth ride at all.
So, I've finished it now (for some reason I was further along than I thought in the story - cliffhanger much?) and it's got a great story and plot, it's just the writing that's messy. I'm interested in reading the next book when I can get my hands o ...more

What is it with all of the jawing in these YA books? Page after page of conversation. You can skip pages and the characters are still going on and on about the same thing.
Maybe this style is currently in vogue.
The Achemyst is a fast read. It had some fun mixing of legends and mythology that kept me entertained. It was on par with any action film... if action films had more conversation.

I just didn't find the story very gripping. A pair of teenage fraternal twins get mixed up with ancient sorcerers, alchemists, and gods, only to find they may be at the center of ancient prophecy. Sounds like it should be good, but a lot of it was more irritating than entrancing.
