I love fiction set in the Victorian era. Sexually-repressive mores and cool, arrogant superiority aside, the Victorians embody a sense of order and etiquette that often escapes us these days. They had protocols for social interaction—protocols embedded in unfortunate distinctions between classes, and laden with the constant threat of small talk about the weather, but protocols nonetheless. This is a hard book to rate. I'll give it a four just based on how "cool" the book is. The world is awesome...one of the best I can think of...but it never really grabbed me. It was certainly interesting, but I had a hard time reading a lot in a sitting.
