from the Earth Journal of Scientific Analyst SLJLK92349UO,

It’s tough to be a human: that is something I’ve learned during my lengthy time studying the human species on this planet Earth. Life itself is hard, of course, with its everyday pitfalls and each individual’s long-term ambitions and disappointments… but for humanity that difficulty is compounded by all of the –isms that exist to divide humanity from itself. Featured on my 2014 favourites list!
I had a pretty good idea going in that I would enjoy this book. What I didn’t know was that I was going to spend a whole day telling myself I would read “just one more chapter” putting off breakfast… and then lunch… until there were no more chapters left to negotiate over, and it was practically dinner time.

This summer saw the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge splash onto social media. ALS terrifies me. A deadly disease that slowly robs you of your ability to move but doesn’t affect your reasoning? I’m not particularly fond of physical activities, but I like embodiment; I like being able to engage with the world actively. The idea of being unable to do that but remaining sound of mind sounds like a terrible way to go.

I generally find Scalzi’s work fun, very readable, but maybe not too thought provoking, not too serious. This managed to combine that sci-fi fun feel with serious issues of disability politics, racial politics, gender — well, all kinds of identity politics, really. It helps to read Unlocked if you’re not very good at picking up context quickly, though I don’t think it’s necessary; it gives you a lot of background, and even a starting point for imagining the characters.

I enjoyed this one a lot. Someone else said in their review that is was 'just' a police procedural with scifi trappings. That is just incorrect. The near-future look at the changes that something like Haden's and lock-in would/could bring to the US is well-realized. I found myself drawing parallels to the classic I, Robot, also a well done police procedural in a near-future setting. I hope Scalzi continues to write in this universe, I'm looking forward to more from Chris Shane and Vann.

has this been optioned for a movie yet? (yes, apparently.) Scalzi comes blazing out straight into a cinematically-described, snappy-paced mystery with this slim novel that's equal parts 'almost human' (the short-lived TV show) and 'i, robot' (the movie version). it's a buddy-cop whodunnit in the rookie + grizzled veteran mold, complete with a murder at the watergate hotel... and robots.

A well-written book, easy to read ("easy on the eyes"), and complicated just enough to engage my brain… AND it's SF!
Good for me ;)
There was a sickness a generation ago, like meningitis or encephalitis, which caused a small amount of the world population to disengage from their bodies, essentially locking them inside their own brains.
This is the story of how society changed because of it … some think for the better but others, mostly those unaffected, think of those "locked in" as victims.

5/5 stars for the narration by Wil Wheaton & for the excellent bonus novella "Unlocked" included in the audible package.

Lots of potential, but far too much world building for a stand alone novel. If this becomes a series, I can't see this being any more than serial sci-fi / mystery fodder. Good read, but not fantastic. And the ending was far too pat and predictable. Certainly not up to Scalzi's normal standards.
Enjoyable reading but not something I see myself repeating. ...more
