Ah, this was so strange, and so good, and so maddening, and so haunting. I’m so frustrated by the ending! Even though of course it told you from the beginning how it would end, and how else could it have ended.
There were times when I was a little put off by this book (especially the beginning, and some of the pica stuff was almost too much visceral body horror for me), but it really rewards you for keeping going. I especially loved the ~new character who was introduced halfway through. And the ...more

I love Helen Oyeyemi. This was deliciously creepy. The writing is very visually evocative. I thought it was an effective, unusual use of the creepy house trope. I also found the pica/eating disorder aspect intriguing.
It would make a terrific movie, along the lines of Lovecraft Country or Get Out.
