I ripped through this in a morning. It has no right to be so compelling - it's a series of non-specific memoir-y essays accompanied by crude drawings. Compelling it is, though. Allie's honesty about her deepest, darkest fears rang true for me.

As a big fan of Brosh's blog (also titled Hyperbole and a Half), I knew I would enjoy this book. Brosh's writing and intentionally crude illustrations run through a spectrum of emotions and experiences, from simple entertainment to deep introspection to utterly relatable issues of being human. Personally I don't think her writing is as well suited to book format as blog format, but that was helped by breaking up the reading into chunks instead of reading straight through.

Some parts were laugh out loud funny, some were touching, others were disappointing. This could have been a better book. It's a shame it wasn't, because I love brosh's voice when she's good.

If only for the all-too-familiar exploits of the Simple Dog and the Helper Dog, I would treasure this book, but Brosh also includes her work on Depression, which is so insightful and incisive it will change your thinking, and straight-up humor like Party, which caused facial muscle spasms due to my laughing so hard. ...more

any book that makes me laugh aloud in my empty house is a 5 star book. even though I'd read some of these before, it was great to read them again. Brosh is a born storyteller and adept cartoonist. but you probably already knew this.
