This was a ridiculously fun book! A satire/lampoon of so many things it was hard to keep track (but I tried): beauty pageants, gender roles, commercialism, marketing, government corruption, etc. etc. etc.
It was bizarre . . . It was silly . . . It was fantastic!
While geared toward the YA crowd, I think the tongue-in-cheek cynicism is something that can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys smart, sarcastic humor. Bray makes a lot of really great points through a story that could easily be dismisse ...more

4.5 Stars Great Satire
Just about every American institution gets skewered. Laugh out loud funny. The girls have good character arcs. I would like some loose ends tied up. Taylor being the biggest one.
I don’t give spoilers but I highly recommend this if you need a good laugh to brighten your day.

This was a fun read. The comparisons with Lord of the Flies that other readers have made have merit. There is more to this book than a bunch of American "pageant girls" surviving on an island for the majority of the these girls find that when they stop being obsessed with being perfect, they find that they are strong and capable women and they make good friends. The author does a great job of lampooning reality TV, American politics, American foreign policy, and consumer products. Those who are

This book turned out to be very different than what I had expected. For one I didn't realize that it's part distopian society...I had presumed it would be set in our modern society but it isn't. The second and larger thing that surprised me and really affected the book strongly was the characters of the girls themselves. The majority of the girls in this book are airheads. They gush over make-up products in the middle of a disaster and put practicing for the beauty pageant over finding things to
