I enjoyed the rest of the series, but this one not so much. I had so many problems with America as a main character. It was ridiculous. She made so many dumb mistakes. Even with all of the issues I had with the book, I still enjoyed being back in the setting of Illya (probably spelled that wrong.)

I was really looking forward to the ending of what I thought was a perfectly enjoyable YA trilogy when *spoiler alert* only to find out that there might be more books to come in this series. Which changes the game in my opinion. As an ending to the story of America, Aspen and Maxon, The One is far from satisfactory. But as a novel that might possibly continue on with America and Maxon’s marriage and how they will reshape the caste system of Illea in the future, it’s not half bad.

Here’s what I lo I was really looking forward to the ending of what I thought was a perfectly enjoyable YA trilogy when *spoiler alert* only to find out that there might be more books to come in this series. Which changes the game in my opinion. As an ending to the story of America, Aspen and Maxon, The One is far from satisfactory. But as a novel that might possibly continue on with America and Maxon’s marriage and how they will reshape the caste system of Illea in the future, it’s not half bad.

Here’s what I loved and didn’t love so much:

1. You literally spend the whole book screaming at America in your head to tell Maxon the damn truth about Aspen! Seriously, could that girl have waffled between two boys and kept them a secret from each other longer?? It was infuriating, but also quite clever of Cass to string us all along. Kept the pages turning for this reader. In the end, Maxon was properly horrified, but didn’t take too long to get over it. What seemed to be a major challenge in America and Maxon ever ending up together, all worked out in the end when his parents suddenly died and he became king. Kind of a messy wrap-up if you ask me, but it worked on some level. We got what we wanted, which was the three of them to sort things out!

2. I really enjoyed the character development of Celeste. She becomes a really likable and relatable girl once we get past all the super model, making out with Maxon stuff. I loved how Cass showed that there is more to a person than appearances and that two girls who seem to have nothing in common can actually end up good friends. Three cheers!

3. The whole dystopian vs. utopian subplot comes more to the forefront in this novel, but it’s still a bit weak to me. Cass is trying to say something with her caste system, but it’s watered down message of equality and not really something that drives the story. I found myself most drawn to the baker woman who crushes on Aspen and the poor girl living as a prostitute who helps America unknowingly. These are the places where Cass’s message of the poor and downtrodden shines brightest.

4. All the girly, bachelor show stuff is just plain fun. It’s fun to imagine being on a TV show, it’s fun to think about winning the chance to be a princess and it’s fun to think about all the pretty dresses and grand dinners that would come along with that type of crazy, unreal experience. Solid points for fluffy fun!

5. The fun aside, The One did get down to some real emotions behind the TV show and competition. You got to see what it might be like to compete for a man’s affections—and it doesn’t seem so grand after all. I liked how honest Cass was about the hurts and betrayals that go one with something of this nature we see on our TV’s all the time.

Overall, this book is an enjoyable read. It’s pretty tame of the sex and violence front and doesn’t delve too deep into the dystopian darkness of novels like Divergent or The Hunger Games. A great beach read for “girls” 14-40! Or 90. Whatever floats your boat :) -M. ...more

Shelves: dystopian-futuristic

One of the reasons why I loved reading the "The Selection" series was because of the length of the reading. It was short and concise but was able to give the readers just enough. I loved the story, I loved the characters, I LOVED the covers, I loved the details, I pretty much loved it all.
