Great character study and the writing flowed seamlessly. The plot is everyday life and the action is living, surviving and growing up in a poor immigrant Irish family in Brooklyn, New York in the 1900s. Be prepared to be engrossed by all the grim and ordinary details of the Nolans' day to day lives.

A true master writer doesn't have to have a flashy theme or other worlds to make ordinary life riveting. Betty Smith is a master author. I definitely recommend it to everyone I know.

A coming-of-age novel not too much unlike Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, or Little Women. It's about a little girl and her humble, yet proud little family growing up and finding wonder and beauty in the poor slums of Brooklyn.
I would never have heard of it if it hadn't been for Goodreads.
While this is can be read and enjoyed by anyone who likes a heart-warming novel, I think I might have liked it more if I had read it in my early teens or something. I found the writing styl

It was interesting to hear about times in the early 1900's but the book was very very slow. It took me a week to read it when It should have taken two days.
