This was one of those books that I'd always planned to get around to reading - as a result, it sat on my to-read shelf for an embarrassingly long time.
What a mistake!

There are so many layers to this book - it's not just a book about a horse race, though it's that too. It's not a book about the hard lives of those living on an island somewhere in the UK/Ireland region around the turn of the century, though you'll find that in there as well. What this really is, is a book about having the freedom

I loved all her books but this was my favourite. There is a magical feeling to her writing I can't quite put in words and the characters feel real and wonderful to read about.

Scorpio Races has a dual perspective, something I don't normally like - especially if it is a YA. I went knowing nothing about the plot other that it was about a race, water horses and first day of November... someone will die .

For me, it took a little while for the meat of the story to pick up, and so it took longer than it usually does for me to read this one.

Some of the dialogue seemed a bit formal to me for the age of the characters, and the level of violence in the story was a bit, well, scary considering the target demographic.

On a small island called Thisby in the Scorpio Sea water horses are caught and raced every November. These "mythical" horses are never to be trusted and won't be tamed. Sean knows the horses best and he has won the race four times. Puck is a girl and has never been in the race. She will be the first girl to ever ride and also rides her own horse. Both Sean and Puck need to win for different reasons.

The story was very enjoyable and entertaining. Oh yeah….and I cried at the end.
