This was one of those books that I'd always planned to get around to reading - as a result, it sat on my to-read shelf for an embarrassingly long time.
What a mistake!
There are so many layers to this book - it's not just a book about a horse race, though it's that too. But, at the same time, the myth of the water horses is absolutely fascinating and this story is absolutely 100% unique in it's portrayal of that. To imagine, using these mythical creatures ...more

On a small island called Thisby in the Scorpio Sea water horses are caught and raced every November. These "mythical" horses are never to be trusted and won't be tamed. Sean knows the horses best and he has won the race four times. Puck is a girl and has never been in the race. She will be the first girl to ever ride and also rides her own horse. Both Sean and Puck need to win for different reasons.
The story was very enjoyable and entertaining. Oh yeah….and I cried at the end. ...more
