"There are many kinds of magic" - and this book was one.
"Stories have changed my dear; there is no more battle between good and evil, no monsters to slay, no maidens to rescue" - Yes, this story did prove this.

If the dictionary needed a picture for "enchanting," this book would most definitely qualify. Each circus tent is a fantasy world of its own, and I didn't want the adventure to end. There are endless possibilities, things left unseen that tickle the imagination as readers wonder at what could be. And the characters are mysteriously quirky, from the mundane to the magical, who all have an influential part to play.

Morgenstern has a great narrative voice, bringing me in as a reader from the get go. ...more

Let's start with the positives: I can absolutely see why so many people fell in love with this book. The story is sweeping and magical and the writing is beautiful and lyrical. It's a fantastic adventure that has a lot of heart. That being said, though, I just wasn't the right reader for this book. The story was most certainly intriguing, but I found that it lacked the characterization to make it a spectacular novel. There were too many blank spaces, where the reader was unable to really get a grasp on the entire outline of the characters.
If anything, I feel we should have learned more about Alexander and the Prospero, since their past clearly seems to have affected the entire play out of the games. Maybe Erin Morgenstern wished to leave that open for speculation, but for me, there just se ...more
