This book was slow until around the halfway point. Then it really picked up. There are a ton of characters we read about but it is not hard at all to keep track and follow their journey but also to grasp the way Ng developed them. It is a fascinating story and one that makes you question your sides on a few serious issues. I had high expectations going into reading the book and I was not let down but the slow start is why I went four stars instead of five.

I found Mias work and the way the process and photographs were described good. I also liked how she worked, her way of destroying the negatives and moving on felt refreshing and interesting. I did like the how the three mother's lifestyles were so different and how there was no right or wrong between them. The reason why I have rated this as a 2 star is because of the secrets being so clear before they were revealed.i felt there was no mystery to them and found them obvious and not original whic ...more

Only my second Ng book and I can already tell she is the queen of uncovering the cracks behind the facade of seemingly perfect American families. Reading her books is like wearing a beautiful handmade sweater where one day you notice a tiny weak flaw. You begin noticing every day it is slowly unraveling until it’s completely fallen apart. You can see how it fell apart but you know you would never be able to stop it.
