The entire plot revolves around astronaut Mark Watney trying to survive alone on Mars long enough to be rescued. Sure, he’s depending on a government-funded space agency to do it, but otherwise it’s a great Objectivist tale of a man using his reason and wits to get ahead in life.

Interestingly, there’s no villain in this story. There’s no government bureaucrat back at NASA saying that they should let Watney die on Mars, or trying to sabotage things, or any Martians trying to eat Watney. The only

Every once in a while a book comes along that reminds you that a 5-star rating should be used sparingly. 5 stars are for books that everyone should read and that inspired you. 4 stars are books you just really liked. The Martian is a bona fide 5 star book. It's amazing and informative and stressful and great and inspiring. I loved it. It's also a rare book where the movie fits with it great and it might be more beneficial to read the book before seeing the movie!!

On a recommendation I read this book and I am so glad I did. The Martian by Andy Weir was fantastic. It's about a man who gets separated from his crew on Mars during a dust storm. Thinking he is dead his crew leaves him behind. The story is about Mark Watney who is a botanist and an engineer. With his brains, creativity and humor he overcomes many obstacles about living on Mars. That's all I will say without giving it all away.
