Death as narrator is a unique and powerful way to tell this story. As a reader you know about individual character's' death before it occurs, which is off-putting but intense. The story is unbelievably sad, but must have occurred over and over during WWll. I "read" this on Audible, and the reader was superb.

A very very heavy read. The fact that death is the narrator kind of sets the tone for the whole thing.
