Sarah J. Maas has a wonderfully descriptive language. I loved how she described the things in nature. This observation from the beginning reeled me in:
...she gaped at the bluish-gray sky, at the clouds slipping on their shoes and shuffling toward the horizon.
Unfortunately, in this story, characterization is not the author's strong suit. It seemed as though Celaena was a piecemeal patchwork of abilities and likes/dislikes that never formed into any sort of coherent personality. I had a ...more

This was a fun enough book, but it was more fluff than tough. I wanted less courtly castle stuff and more action scenes. The magic and world building were fun. I hope to see more about the fantasy world in the next book. Oh, and I really hope it's Choal and not Dorian...

This series goes on my "I want to own this" list.
The first book was very difficult to put down. The main character is a teenage assassin who has a rather complicated past. Twisty politics, a hint of magic, competition and fights and things that go bump in the night - it has it all. Even a love triangle or two.
I was very well pleased with this and can't wait to go on to the next book in the series. Highly recommended if you like fantasy and feisty heroines. ...more
