I've only just read this. Have I been hiding under a rock? No. I enjoyed the films and I just read this to my 9 year old daughter. The thing is, when this came out it was the perfect time for me to NOT read it. It first came out in 1997. At the time I was twenty and wasn't really reading much. I was spending most of my time smoking cigarettes, drinking and rocking out with our band - 'The Liability Crisis'. At that time I probably ONLY read Terry Pratchett. Well, I read this to my daughter a long time ago. She actually owns it in paperback and as the big illustrated edition. It's funny how time flies though isn't it? Very enjoyable read even if you are an adult.
It would probably have been a 5 star rating, but I don't share the nostalgia that most on here have for these books. I only just recently started reading them in my 20s, I know I would have loved them if I had read them when I was much younger. It's obviously meant for a much younger audience so the writing is a bit simple. Great for a light read.
I fully intend to read the rest of the series as soon as I can get my hands on them.
