This was SO CUTE! I listened to the audiobook narrated by Daniel Henning and it was outstanding. The way the story started I was able to relate to the main character immediately, and by the end of the book I really felt like I was living through them. I also loved every child's uniqueness, they all made the story as special as it was. I honestly had low expectations because this isn't my usual genre but it was refreshing. I look forward to sequels and I'm glad that Fantastical Fiction Book Club

Jan. 11, 2024 edit: Changing this to 1 star because part of the inspiration for this book was Klune looking into the Sixties Scoop, using a history of cultural genocide for his story, and then making it "the system that removes kids from their parents just needs good people in it actually." Let me preface this by saying that as a queer, disabled, often isolated, person, seeing stories that illuminate any sense of joy or comfort can be a life-changing experience. The House in the Cerulean Sea brought me not just joy and comfort but a reminder of how beautiful queer life can be, maybe when I needed that reminder most.
