I LOVED THIS BOOK!

I remember getting up as a kid on school days to watch that Alice and Wonderland type of show on Disney (forgot the title honestly). I have always enjoyed things about Wonderland so I was skeptic to read a retelling because with me, retellings can go either way, love it or hate it. I ADORED this one! The world and characters fascinate completely! So glad I own the other books in the series so I can read them this coming weekend!

Našla jsem další knihu svého srdce, stejně jako Shatter Me. Prostě je to TA kniha (prostě to poznáte a víte, že je to ona). Šepotání nebylo vůbec nějak dokonalé, dokonce nebylo ani vynikající. Alyssa knows that if her mom has electric shock therapy she will never be the same and one day she will be in her shoes. I've had Splintered on my TBR list forever after all I pre-ordered it when it came out so it's been on my pile for a while. At first, I was waiting for the series to be completed as I knew that I would gobble them up one after another. I am after all an Alice in Wonderland addict. Splintered just happened to fit a reading challenge so it was a perfect time to dive into the story.

I really liked Alyssa right from the start I found her easy to connect she's unique which I found refreshing. She may be a descendant of The Alice but she's as different as she can get. I wasn't sure at first about Jeb her love interest but the more we got to know him the more I liked him. I wanted to dislike Morpheus but he has this charm about him. The concept for Splintered was captivating it has the classic charm with a modern spin. I truly enjoyed each page and found it hard to put down. I ended up devouring most of it in one afternoon. I loved every page and can't wait to read the rest of the series and see what happens in wonderland. ...more

Splintered is the most unique retelling I've ever read.If you haven't guessed it yet,this is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland.I loved the New Wonderland the author created in this book and I can't wait to see what happens next.

First of all,the cover is gorgeous.I just had to say that first and get it out of the way.I think it represents the book completely.I literally felt as if I was living everything.Everything felt so real.I have to admit that I loved this twisted version of Wonderland mor Splintered is the most unique retelling I've ever read.If you haven't guessed it yet,this is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland.I loved the New Wonderland the author created in this book and I can't wait to see what happens next.

First of all,the cover is gorgeous.I just had to say that first and get it out of the way.I think it represents the book completely.I literally felt as if I was living everything.Everything felt so real.I have to admit that I loved this twisted version of Wonderland more than the real Wonderland.It's just more interesting and fascinating.I also loved the plot and found it really clever.It was truly amazing.The way the author twisted the facts and everything.I was also really impressed with the writing.

I decided to give it 4.5 stars because I was a bit disappointed when the end came and I discovered that Jeb forgot everything.But if you think about it,that's what it was supposed to happen...so we can jump right into the next book.And I'll say it again.I'm not a fan of love triangle and I believe there's a love triangle coming.It's pretty obvious.But...I'm team Morpheus.At first I was team Jeb but...Morpheus is just so mysterious and dark.I just can't pass that up.

And now let's talk a bit about the characters.

Alyssa:Our main character who is Alice's great-great-great granddaughter.Hope I got that right.She has a strong spirit in my opinion,but she's afraid that she'll go insane like her mother.At first she denies everything and wants to believe that the things that happen to her aren't real.But soon...she does what she was supposed to do from the beginning.That sounded a bit dramatic but...okay.

Jeb:His Alyssa's crush and he's really protective of Alyssa.He's an artist and if you haven't guessed it already...he's handsome...and hot.And he has a lip piercing.I have to admit that Alyssa is lucky to have a boy like him with her!

Morpheus:Oh...Dark,mysterious,typical bad boy.He's the bad boy of the story and after everything that happened in the book...I shouldn't have wanted him to be with Alyssa...But I just can't help it.I always fall for the bad boys.

If you love retellings like I do and you haven't read this beautiful book yet...go pick it up.No need to tell you that I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel... ...more

It's so beautiful, creepy, wonderful, lyrical, amazing, descriptive, unique, creative, totally one of a kind awesomeness!

In short---THIS BOOK ROCKED MY WORLD!

But...I had to knock one star off...

Because as much as I thought the ending was sweet, it was not how I WANTED it to end! BOO!!!! ...more

I knew from the first page that I was going to absolutely adore this book. I am a sucker for Alice in Wonderland retellings. Splintered while it stays true to the Lewis Carroll version in many ways incorporates a lot of new and original ideas that kept me interested and guessing throughout the novel. Every time a familiar character entered the story I was excited to see how Howard would turn the character on its head and make it her own. It made for a darker even more interesting Wonderland.

Every time a familiar character entered the story I was excited to see how Howard would turn the character on its head and make it her own. It made for a darker even more interesting Wonderland.

Alyssa was a great heroine. Ever since the 5th grade she has heard bugs and flowers speaking to her. Fearing she will become like her mother who is living in a mental institution. Alyssa tells no one about the voices and makes art collages of the bugs who will not stop speaking to her. I liked Alyssa’s determination and strength throughout the novel. She was willing to do anything to help her mother. And when her friend Jeb is dragged in to Wonderland she fights to keep him safe and protect him.

While Jeb and Alyssa were great in their own ways my favorite character was definitely the caterpillar! In the Carroll story Caterpillar was just a bug sitting on a mushroom smoking hookah. In Splintered Caterpillar has become a butterfly and is a sexy, somewhat shady man named Morpheus. He was easily my favorite character in the story. I liked all of his ulterior motives and plans and I never once doubted his loyalty to Alyssa although there may have been some….okay many reasons to.

Believe it or not I liked the romance (love triangle) in this book. Usually I am not a big fan of love triangles but Howard does a great job of making you love both Jeb and Morpheus. It was also a little reminiscent of a Julie Kagawa Iron Fey love triangle. While there may be two boys it was pretty obvious who Alyssa was going to choose (even if I wanted it to be different).

I also liked that this novel tackled a big issue, mental illness, which isn’t talked about enough even in “issue” YA contemporary novels. I liked how Howard incorporated what happens to a family when a parent has a mental illness and the effect it can have on the child, other parent, and those around her. Howard also incorporated abusive homes, and the loss of a parent while still keeping the novel rather light.

It is the mark of a good storyteller when a novel sticks with you and you can’t wait to read it again so you can return to that world. Splintered has done this to me! I can not wait to get my hands on a finished copy so that I can return to Wonderland right along with Alyssa (and see Morpheus again of course ^.~)

This series by A.G. Howard has probably some of the most gorgeous book covers that I have ever seen. The colors and characters- stunningly beautiful! Wow. So interesting and unique.

I'm not always a fan of retellings, so some parts of this "darker twist" I wasn't always a fan of....BUT I can tell you what I WAS a fan of....you can probably guess.

Alyssa and Jeb! Ugh, so cute...especially that ending. I don't know what to do with Morpheus though, mixed feelings (same as Alyssa felt!).

I don't know how they could continue this because it seemed pretty complete to me.
