It’s rare to find a book that so accurately depicts what it is to find yourself and the confusion of finding your queerness. This was said book, obviously.

Nick’s journey was so heart wrenching but relatable. He literally went to the internet just as most queer kids do. It’s so … confusingly spot on. Especially at his age, finding out such a profound old but new thing about yourself that’s been there all along without you knowing.

Nick’s journey was so heart wrenching but relatable. He literally went to the internet just as most queer kids do. It’s so … confusingly spot on. Especially at his age, finding out such a profound old but new thing about yourself that’s been there all along without you knowing.

I remember when I first realized I was queer it was just an off handed comment to a friend, the classic ‘oh yeah, I’m bisexual’ (I’m pan but close enough). I hadn’t thought about it before, I didn’t have the Charlie or Jonathon Van Ness experience of always knowing. I mean, there were signs, but I didn’t realize it would mean anything to me until after I realized. Even after I made the off hand comment, I forgot and went along with my life until a couple months later my friend brought it up.

That’s when my Nick-esque queer crisis occurred. I found people online, I looked into queer history. I figured out what queerness meant to other people so I could see what it meant to me. Maybe not the best way of going about it, but it worked for me and it worked for Nick. And I’m not about to complain about where I am with that part of my identity today.

And just like Nick, I was terrified to tell my parents. I had known for longer and wasn’t in a relationship, but I was just as scared. I’m so grateful to have accepting parents (even though I’ve had my qualms with their reactions and am uncomfortable when they bring it up at times, but they’re trying). It’s pure therapy to see the coming out scenes. Just pure joy.

Luckily, unlike Nick but like Charlie, I’ve always had the sweet, well intentioned, and protective minority friend group. I’ve got my own Tao, Elle, Aled, and all that jazz. I love them and I love the characters, too. They’re so adorable and perfect and real (and fictional, sadly).

And their behavior makes sense. We (I) get the explanation, we (I) feel the heartbreak, and we (I) feel protective of them as well. Everything connects, and even the darkest moments are celebrated within the existence of these two adorable people who love each other.

Ah, the queer joy I get from this. And the sheer awkwardness of their teenageriness. It’s intense, but it’s real. And Nick and Charlie are cute so I’m here for the awkward adorableness

Literally the only thing that took me out of it for a second was laughing at how Tara held the clarinet. Miss girl is about to bend her keys and break the poor instrument.

But that was funny and everything else was perfect. No complaints, compliments to the chef. ...more
