I will be always a Stephen King fan forever. I never write a review for "Doctor Sleep", so here is my review. I waited and waited for King to release this book. It amazes me that Stephen King is able to write so many consistently good books over these many years.
"Doctor Sleep" is a sequel to the masterpiece The Shining. What works here best is the continuation of the original story that began in The Shining. Admittedly, my interest in that book probably colored my experience of this book. I can I will be always a Stephen King fan forever. I never write a review for "Doctor Sleep", so here is my review. I waited and waited for King to release this book. It amazes me that Stephen King is able to write so many consistently good books over these many years.
"Doctor Sleep" is a sequel to the masterpiece The Shining. What works here best is the continuation of the original story that began in The Shining. Admittedly, my interest in that book probably colored my experience of this book. I can see how a reader would want to start with The Shining for context here.
This is one of his best works and features the Shinning's Jack Torrance's grown son, Danny (Dan/Doc) Torrence. Danny must attempt to stop some incredibly evil beings from taking additional victims. He is however not a perfect hero. Like his father, he drinks, and his power known as the "Shinning" has faded somewhat. He also suffers from guilt over some of the bad decisions he made when drinking too heavily. Nevertheless, Danny must rise to the task of fighting and destroying some deeply fiendish enemies and save a young girl, Abra, who has a much stronger version of his now diminished power and which his newfound adversaries seek to harness for their own use. There are truly some heart-stopping moments in this book, which highlight King's standing as a master writer. Praise to King can never be overstated no matter what subject catches his fancy.
I love Stephen King, so anything he writes will always entertain me. This wasn't his most scary or complex story, but I loved every page. The story was solid and at times predictable, but there were plenty of twists and turns to keep my interest. I loved the characters more than the story. They were rich with problems, humor, and raw emotion. Alcoholism is clearly a theme. So, in my opinion, "Doctor Sleep" is one of the King's best books and vastly more interesting than "The Shinning".
This book is a must for King fans who loved The Shining and also loves King, but I recommend it for any reader whether you have read "The Shinning" or not.

This is the first ever King book I've managed to finish. I was surprised at the humour which tickled me at times and had some great language play in some of the paragraphs. I found the breaking up of the chapters towards the end unnecessary. He could have ended it at a couple of points but I thought the way he chose was subtle and satisfying.
