I read this book in anticipation of watching the new movie and as a result of having read Uncle Tom's Cabin (which I loved!) earlier this year. In tune with it being an autobiography, it is a lot less stylized than Uncle Tom's Cabin, but there are similarities as well. Northup does a very good job of relating the small day-to-day details of slavery that is more difficult for a fictional book. The story of Patsy is particularly moving. Very interesting book, and quite sad to read of the injustice in the world, and the lengths that people have to go in order to obtain their god given right to freedom. Solomon Northup writes with great candour and has a fantastic writing style given the period. I would recommend this book to everyone.
