What Members Thought

I quite enjoyed this young adult fantasy with its unique plot. I’ll admit that it took me a while to like January but then by end, it made sense why she was the way she had been.

Alix E. Harrow knows how to weave a tale. She had me hooked from the beginning. This book has another book within it that is very important to January's story.
I spent most of this book going from feeling sorry for the very sheltered January, wondering what happened to her mother, why her father didn't do more to spend time with her, and wondering who Mr. Locke was and why her father trusted him to take care of her. All the while wo ...more

A girl grows up in an interesting situation and then slowly learns the magical truth of her guardian, her father, and her herself. It was interesting but I found the main character rather unpersuasive; she took a long time to develop agency (for realistic plot reasons, but I was still impatient), the frame didn't make emotional sense, and I had an allergy to love stories. So a good book, but not aimed at me.
