I found myself completely and utterly enchanted by this book and couldn't put it down. Linus Baker leads a very dull, routine life and his job is to check on various orphanages around the country that are homes for children with magical qualities to ensure the children are being cared for properly. When he winds up on an island with a home of very unique children that are not wanted elsewhere and their lovely caregiver, Arthur, he must look deeply at himself and the walls he has put up. Bu kitap ilk çıktığındaki popülerliği sırasında yeni Harry Potter benzetmeleri yapıldığını hatırlıyorum. O yüzden sonunda başladığımda büyük bir beklentim vardı. Bir yetimhanede gücünü kontrol edemeyip büyüyle birine zarar veren bir çocuğu ve yetimhaneyi ziyaret eden görevli sahnesiyle açılınca da yok artık dedim ama sonrasında Harry Potter benzerliklerinden hızlıca uzaklaştık. A gentle-spirited fantasy. Some sweet characters but the plot lacked drive for me.

Quirky, likable characters and wonderful wit make this book a special one. Good for anyone who feels like an outcast and folks who enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant and A Man Called Ove.
