This was a very loose retelling of Princess Anastasia (I know, why did I read not one, but TWO Anastasia retellings in the same month? 🤪🤪🤪).

In Ana’s kingdom of Cyrilia affinite’s are to be feared for the powers they hold. Ana is the crown princess but also secretly a deadly affinite. After her father was murdered she was forced into hiding. While trying to track down her father’s killer she joins Ransom, a known con man. They have to work together and learn to trus Blood Heir by Amelie Wen Zhao

What I liked about this book:
-first of all, the cover! I admired the cover before reading the book, however AFTER reading I feel like the artist’s depiction of Ana is STUNNING and SPOT ON, her. Love 😍
-I loved the magic of the affinites. It was diverse and each person’s affinity was either weak or powerful. So if there were two wind affinites, one would likely be stronger than the other.
-I felt that the storyline of how the affinites were treated was done so well. It kind of reminded me of the X-men popular storyline, “people fear what they don’t understand” and also what they cannot control. It was very believable and also evoked strong feelings which made me more involved with the book.
-I really enjoyed how the book as a whole started slow but the last third was soo action packed!
-I liked how the end wasn’t a cliffhanger that left me hanging but has me very excited to read the next book!

What I didn’t like about this book:
-*Spoilers* I was upset about a death in the book. I understand why it happened and how that event propelled certain other actions in the book but I was still very cranky about it. ☹️
-I thought one character’s story arc was a bit abrupt. But I appreciated that maybe that character’s back story was part of the motivation too so eehh. Also, that character is still not a fave. Maybe they will grow on me more in the next book.
-I am not excited that this is a trilogy with the third book having an unknown publishing date. I want the rest of the story and I want it now.
