Normally it has all the things that appeal to me: exploration, science, women being bad-ass, the Victorian-esque time period, and even dragons! and yet somehow this book managed to make dragons very boring. Also so many of them were killed! (Luckily Marie Brennan mentioned if this was IRL she would not kill them). Even the bits of magic that do exist (like the dragon breath) seem sapped of all wonder.

Dragons tend to have a few distinct characteristics in fantasy fiction. First, they talk; two, they allow humans to ride them; and three, they are invariably enormous, there being very little relative difference among the types, if there are subtypes of dragon.
Marie Brennan’s dragons share none of these characteristics, and that’s what makes them so magnificent.
