One day I was subbing a 10th grade English class and saw a student with Red, White & Royal Blue on their desk. I asked if I could take a look and when I realized the novel was an LGBT romance I was so happy! When I was in school, my library didn’t have any books like this, so knowing how far we’ve come (though there is still much father to go) made my heart swell. I wish I had access to books

I really enjoyed this book right up until the end, unfortunately. The beginning was eh, but once things picked up I felt so connected with the characters and was so happy to see them fall in love. For me, they fell in love too quickly. There were about 100 pages of the book left and to me it felt like the biggest conflict was resolved already. i expected this to be a light and breezy little rom com, and in a lot of ways it was, but my god were there gusts of something deep. the ending was a little too happy though, which sounds so cynical, but, like, c’mon. also, the perspective felt off — for some reason i desperately wanted this to be written in the first person.

I seriously wish this is more realistic than it is escapist (re: the 2016 election). This book, however, absolutely pulled me into Alex’s life and I felt I understood his character and emotions.
McQuiston’s writing is just *so good* and I read it as easily as my own thoughts. Each character has a wonderfully developed voice and personality, and they all mesh together is a perfectly chaotic cohesion.
