"Carry on, carry on - 'cuz nothing really matters" - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

As I read this book, many songs with the words "carry on" ran through my head, but this seems to be the one Rowell wanted me to be singing.

The book was, as it should be, fun filled fan fiction making light of pop culture icons, young adult fantasy fiction, and teen romance. It was silly and quite enjoyable.

If you read Fangirl, of course you must read this.

People who read my review of Fangirl know that I wasn't too much of a fan of that book and that the only thing that I actually really liked were the fanfic snippets - i.e the Simon Snow stuff. Needless to say I was therefore very, very happy when Rainbow Rowell announced this book.

I didn't go out and buy it right when it was published, though, because 1) everywhere I looked the prices for this were sky high and 2) I was scared that Rowell wouldn't be able to write a more fantasy-ish book well. S

This might just be the single most contrived story I've ever read. It's roots in Fangirl make it so. Yet it manages through all of the pains Rainbow Rowell takes (wink, wink, wink, nudge, nudge) to show that it is most assuredly not a piece of Harry Potter / Draco Malfoy slash fic to become an amusing little tale in it's own right, and of it's own type, independent of it's ties. Believe me, I was as surprised as anyone to find that my knowing smirk had become a genuine grin. The balanci

For some reason, I did not think I would like this so I've been dodging reading it for awhile. LOVED it. I was feeling meh when I started, but it totally brought me around. I super enjoyed it the entire time. I've seen a lot of comparisons to HP, and it does have that feel several times, but it also has its own vibrant awesomeness. The tone is also really different. There's an undercurrent of a sort of humorous, easy going, accepting vibe no matter what the actual scene is. Carry On was

So, when I first started this it seriously felt like a Harry Potter rip-off, but as I kept going I began to really enjoy it. There was enough deviation to make it feel fresh. Plus, I really liked Simon, the first bi character I've encountered in YA whose entire story wasn't about him being bi. Huzzah. Not sure I would read any other Rainbow Rowell books -- the writing style is just not my favorite, but this was an okay book to spend a few hours on. :D ...more

Read my full review on my blog, Turning Pages.

I liked Carry On, Rainbow Rowell’s first full fantasy novel, but I didn’t love it. Simon and Baz are adorable, but I wish their relationship was a bit more developed. The pacing is quite slow, and some readers may struggle to stick with it until things pick up. There are also some inconsistencies and plot holes. But like every Rowell book, it’s also charming, enjoyable, and funny. If you can look past its issues, then you’ll really enjoy Carry On.

THIS BOOK WAS WHAT DARRY HARRY POTTER SHIPPERS WOULD HAVE LOVED!!!!
I love the way Rainbow Rowell writes with such rawness. One example of this is (view spoiler)
Everything about this book screams Harry Potter without trying to, and i would say that this is the best element of the book.
In terms of characters.... obviously Baz, i mean COME ON, QUEER VAMPIRE?????? Great Characterization for all except Agatha. I feel like, at a certain point in the book,

My ranking is actually 4.5 stars. The beginning was kinda slow for me as where everything that happened in the end was super fast. I felt my inner fangirl just go wild with the characters and certain special moments. I feel like the ending could have been wrapped up a bit better but overall the characters were great the story it's self was amazing and I loved reading the book. ...more

Solid YA

Told from different character views, this book follows the emotions of several characters as search validation within themselves and each other.
