I am impressed. It took me a while to get into this book, but as it went on and the pieces fell into place, I was gripped, surprised, and satisfied by the experience as a whole.

With this book you will find some uniqueness in the plot. Have you ever read a mystery about a "submarine" in a barn in Virginia? Didn't think so. Also, the courtroom drama is great. Throughout the book there are at least 5 or 6 people who seem plausibly guilty because the evidence is there. You will be guessing ...more

Last book of 2020 and what a great way to end! I highly suggest this book to EVERYONE! The author is a fantastic writer that pulls from her own experience into the writing the novel.

Also, she does a Q & A with her editor at the end of the audiobook. I highly suggest listening to that because it is super interesting!

I had high hopes for this book and it's been difficult for me to assign a rating because I'm not sure if the story (including the conclusions) or the research/writing was more "off" for me...In the end, I think both are problematic. The author seems to put forth what is an interesting and very real scenario-parents approaching their children's disabilities in different ways. The problem, however, is that she sprinkles in many ableist ideas and really does nothing to address them. In listening to ...more

Brief Summary: They called it the Miracle Submarine; a hyperbaric oxygen chamber providing treatment for various medical issues and diagnoses including infertility, autism, and cerebral palsy. One day the tank catches fire and explodes; killing two kids with disabilities and one mother. The book begins during the court trial and you’re introduced to the various cast of characters where everyone has secrets to hide and anyone could’ve set the fire. The book begins during the court trial and you’re introduced to the various cast of characters where everyone has secrets to hide and anyone could’ve set the fire. I was really excited to read this book given my interest in cultural diversity; especially disability and I had high hopes given the author’s personal experience as an immigrant, Asian American, and mother to a special needs child.

For me the highlights were learning about the Korean immigrant experience and especially the way they perceive disability. I gained an appreciation for the immigrant experience in which the language skills of the child surpassed out of the parent. Kim does a good job depicting the medical and minority models of disability. She does attempt to give a balanced perspective of disability by comparing the lives of Rosie and Mary Yoo, yet the feeling I took away about disability from this book was negative. The mothers in her story pet sacrificed their lives for their kids with disabilities but many don’t. They were also very focused on treatment, rather than living their lives. There are definitely some mothers out there like that, but this is not the way all mothers perceive their children’s disabilities.

Overall this was a very interesting premise that teaches valuable lessons about cultural diversity. I just wish the disability aspect of the novel didn’t leave me feeling so negative. Disability is a challenging experience that takes a toll on the entire family. However people with disabilities are very resilient and can achieve a high quality of life.

I am eager to discuss this with others who have an appreciation about disability especially kids with disabilities and the impact it has on their parents. I think professionals who work with kids with disabilities and mothers of special needs children will find this book interesting.
