What Members Thought

“...if the word integration means anything, this is what it means: that we, with love, shall force our brothers to see themselves as they are, to cease fleeing from reality and begin to change it.”

“White people in this country will have quite enough to do in learning how to accept and love themselves and each other, and when they have achieved this—which will not be tomorrow and may very well be never—the Negro problem will no longer exist, for it will no longer be needed.”

This is and will always be a book that is relevant in the lives of American Negroes and the white Americans.
This book should be required reading to all. America cannot keep living a lie and continue to believe that racial injustice is no longer relevant. Systemic racism, obvious racism, judicial racism, political racism, and any other form of racism still exists today as it did many decades ago. This book is a hard truth that needs to be set in front of those that want to be ignorant or blinded ...more

I just finished this book a 3rd time, about 18 years after I last read it and it's as prescient and relevant as it was the first time I read it (about 30 years ago). Hopefully, by 2063, one hundred years after its 1963 first publishing we can look at this book as a sort of curiosity. Doubtful. This book is as brilliant as ever and I certainly won't be waiting another 18 years to read it again cause I will be reading it again.

I'd round it down to a 3.5.
I read this book decades ago but decided to read it again when one of my GR groups was reading it last month. What a difference a few decades makes! What I noticed first on re-reading this book was the format of it. I remember have enjoyed it a lot the first time. This time, I found my mind wandering. Each page may have consisted of one paragraph that consisted of one to three run-on sentences. I found this stream of consciousness style very difficult for me to stay wi ...more

Sometimes, it takes too long to get to a book.
I'm glad I got to it it finally.
Brilliant. Utterly and completely stunning. It is, disappointingly, as applicable today as when it was written. Please do yourself a kindness and read it. It is short and powerful, and if you do the audio version, you can complete it in just a couple hours. I'm a better and more knowledgeable person for having read it.
