Did I enjoy it? Yes! I like it so much more than I was expecting? I mean, I'm not usually much of a poetry person. I like poems, but I'm not the type of person who just picks up a book of poetry and reads it cover to cover. That being said, this book was more than a collection of poems. It was a free verse memoir, and the flow of the words is lovely. The language really brought Woodson's story of her life to, well, life.

Set in prose, from Ohio, NY and SC. Living in SC while a Native from NY. I understood family, love and relationships. Who would name there daughter Jack? Dad was insistent from birth. Perhaps he wanted a strong son. Having your name represents who you are. My mother struggled with the Lyns. Marilyn, Gwendolyn, Carolyn and Jacquelyn so I identified with having the right name from birth. And Jacquelyn it was.. Born in a time of civil war, Vietnam, and uncertainty but from love.
