What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? I've read it twice. Told in a simple language from multiple points of view, this novel has stayed with me and inspired me to write about my own Indian culture. I loved learning about Chinese immigrant attitudes--white people are considered ghosts; fengshui and the Five Elements are key to a harmonious life; the tiger spirit that resides in every woman. This book was a tough read. I have to say I did not enjoy it. There was so much tragedy. So many of the daughters married complete jerks. And it was tough to endure the way the characters talked to each other. I know they loved each other, I'm just used to people expressing their love in more obvious ways. Some of the stories were really engaging, and I have to give the book credit for the tender moments it did include. But, on the whole it was too much for this snowflake.
