I’m a huge fan of Backman’s books, and eagerly requested Beartown as soon as it was available. And, although I loved his previous books, I was happy to hear that this one was a departure, with no lovable curmudgeon at its core.

My Dad is the Referee-in-Chief for USA Hockey, Pacific division. I grew up with hockey. I didn’t play, in fact, I can barely ice skate. My 3 brothers played and I could really relate to the bond that the Beartown team forged especially after being successful. From my own experience, Beartown could be about any sport. All for one, one for all is about team spirit. Imagine the courage it would take for one person to split from that tight knit group for their personal beliefs and what is morally ri

Loved it just as much the 2nd time!!!
How I enjoy this author's novels! He certainly knows how to tell a story.
Beartown is a story about small-town hockey and it's community. People with hopes, dreams, heartache, corruption and secrets.
The town revolves around it's junior hockey team and they are about to compete in the national semi-finals. It's now up to a group of teenage boys to fulfill the hopes and dreams of Beartown.

Beartown, a declining hamlet in the middle of a Swedish forest, has one big hope - ice hockey. Beartown's junior hockey team, the Bears, has made it to the national semi-finals, and - if they go on to win a championship - might attract a new sports arena to Beartown, along with tournaments, hotels, tourist traffic, and so on.

This boon to Beartown's economy would be welcome to business owners, residents, and hockey sponsors. Thus, the high school boys who play for the Bears are pressured by both ...more

"Culture, Values, Community" is the motto of the Beartown Ice Hockey Club. It's junior team is playing in the semifinal. All the hopes of Beartown are resting on the shoulders of the team. Kevin, Benji, Bobo, Amat and William are five of the twelve team members, ages 13 to 17 years old, who carry the aspirations of Beartown. David, the coach, and Peter, the general manager, are shouldering the responsibility of the hopes and dreams of the whole town. If the junior team wins the semifinal, and th

"Beartown" is the story of a small town where the whole town seems to find hope in the kids' hockey league. There is also a darker aspect to this book that I was not expecting; this isn't exactly a feel-good story. For my fellow Americans, the hockey team has very much the same feel as a high school football team in a small American town. The hockey team brings the town hope but they also run the town and get away with a lot that they would not get away with if it weren't for the team.

I really love Backman's ability to portray human emotion and psychology. I have liked everything of his that I have read. This book was hard to read at times - and all the more so because I can think of at least two different news stories in the past couple years where this scenario played out.

The best thing I've read in such a long time. I didn't want to put it down. I'm also going to give a copy to all of my friends. :) if you have not read Backman you need to read him now!
