The novel of Amir and Hassan is a powerfully, well-written story. Amir is the son of a Pashtun aristocrat who lives in Kabul, Afghanistan. Hassan is the son of a Hazara servant, Ali. The Kite Runner is simply the most American foreign novel I've ever read. For those who aren't clear on this, that's not a good thing. We'll come back to this...
As a story, The Kite Runner starts a bit slow. I wasn't engaged as a reader until eighty to a hundred pages in.
