What Members Thought

2.5 stars
I guess I'm the outlier. The premise was a good one and the book started out strong. I thought the depictions of abuse without resorting to physical abuse in the strictest sense were excellent.
However, the story didn't quite work for me. I won't go into the plot but I couldn't get past the implausible circumstances. Grace was a buyer at Harrod's but her sister Millie, who had Down's syndrome, had more sense. Grace had a high powered job but suddenly turns into a weak pathetic character ...more

This is a psychological thriller about Jack and Grace Angel. They meet in the park where Grace and her sister Millie are enjoying a picnic and the musical band. Millie, who has Down's Syndrome, gets up and dances by herself. Soon Jack bows graciously and starts dancing with her. Grace's heart tumbles down love's path. Even after Jack learns that Millie and Grace are a package deal, he wants them both to be a part of his life.

Grace and Jack Angel appear to be an almost perfect couple, deeply in love and happy to spend every spare moment together.

In fact Grace can't take a single step without being dogged by Jack, and it soon becomes clear that something is very much "off" between them. The reader learns that Grace is essentially Jack's prisoner, out of fear he'll do harm to her sister Millie, a 17-year-old girl who has Down Syndrome.

The story alternates between the present and the past. In the present, we see that G ...more

3.5 Super tense! This guy (Jack) has thought of everything. I don't think I've hated a character so much. It's a good read and thank you, Leslie for passing it along :)

I've never read a book with such an evil, rotten, slimy, despicable, nasty, obnoxious character in my whole life!! In fact, Jack was so loathsome that I almost stopped reading the story, unwilling to let the idea of him stay even for a second in my head. But I'm glad I overcame my abhorrence of him to finish the book. My guts were twisted as I kept hoping that Grace would find a way out of her captivity, though it didn't seem likely that she would. I hope to God this isn't based, even in part, o

OK, so, I wanted to give this book 5 stars but I am left with a few unanswered questions. I know that there are many relationships that live one way to the public and another way 'behind closed doors'. I appreciate how the author developed this story gradually changing Jack's personality as the story progressed. Many of us have friends who we suspect are living in abusive relationships but in an effort to not get involved or pry we don't talk about it with them. Grace had friends who questioned

2.5 stars. Not for me, a weaker cup of tea than I’d like. I want black coffee. No dilution. No cream. No sugar.
This book was gifted to me by a client, and I felt obliged to read it, so i can talk to her about it during her next visit.
It’s a very easy read; no nonsense, slightly ridiculous thriller with imho, unlikeable narrators with little dimension and a simple plot-line with too many holes.
A summer beach read, probably featured in Glamour or Cosmopolitan (does that still exist?) Mumsy fict ...more
