What Members Thought

This will go down as one of my favorite books of all time. My husband is currently reading it. I think he will also feel the same. Ove has a big heart, but is quite sensible, in my opinion. Actually, I think he tries to let his sensible side rule because his heart is so big that it might just leap out.

I started Ove 3 times before it stuck. Ove is grouchy and truly an unlikable character. It was hard for me to fall in line and like this character(a lot of deep sighing)...until the epilogue. Deep inside I knew he couldn't have been as heartless as he let on and he wasn't. I liked the cat. The cat outsmarting Ove was funny, the dedication to his wife was heartbreaking, and the 'rough' tenderness he had for the neighbors was touching.

The beauty and value of a life and the meaning that can be found in living with and for others are themes that are brought home in this book in a touching, humorous, and sometimes heartbreaking way. Ove is the quintessential grumpy old man who may or may not be hiding a heart of gold underneath his crusty exterior. His curmudgeonly ways were softened by his wife but (view spoiler) ...more

"A Man Called Ove" is one of those books that had a huge following before I ever got around to reading it. After reading it, I knew exactly why this book had such a big following. This is a warm hearted story about an old man named Ove. He misses his wife and has lost his zest for life. His days consist of planning his death so when he has new neighbors move next door who won't take no for an answer when it comes to involving him in their life, he begins to see that there can be more (but he's n

What a great book! Hilerical, which is a cross between "hilarious" and "hysterical", and it makes you feel good, too. Grumpy old man misses his wife so much that he tries to join her, but he gets so mad at his neighbors' incompetencies that he can't quite kill himself. The community discovers as the story moves along that Ove isn't such a bad guy. There are many laugh-out-loud moments in this book that was translated from the original Swedish and takes place in that country "with a climate simil

No idea why a person of Ove's age was made out to be so old; the author's constant references about his age would have made more sense for a much older adult (unless in Sweden 60 is the end of the road for all things vibrant and dynamic).
There were occasions when I hollered and laughed, especially the driving lesson. The neighbor and her daughters were my favorite characters, and I wish they had been given more depth and development.

The loveliest novel I've read all year by far. I highly recommend this book. It will make you smile and laugh out loud and recognize the beauty that is around us.
