This is a book about hopelessness, the dawning of hope, ultimate terror, and rebuilding.
What happens in these pages is terrifyingly possible as can be seen in news stories that crop up from time to time about a twisted person who has someone locked in their basement/backyard for years. When I think about that, I get chills with the realization that somewhere in the world right now - even close to home - there might be someone going through exactly what is happening in this book.

I am so so so tempted to give this five stars, but something in me just can't do it.
What can I say - I ate this book up. It sometimes takes me a good week to read a book, but I was through this in less than a day, foregoing sleep in order to finish it. I loved how the book was from the perspective of Jack. Although the language is juvenile - that is exactly what you would expect from one living in his conditions.
Everything Ma did was fair enough, but she annoyed me at times. It was just a bit h ...more
