I feel like this should be a must read essay for everyone. Very astute commentary on the misrepresentation of feminism and the way that gender labeling and roles are pronounced in our society. Also aptly suggests solutions.

I guess I am and have always been a feminist!
This book really opened my eyes to the fact that our world is in fact catered to men... not that I didn't realize already, but not only here in the United States, but in all parts of the world, men are born and raised to believe that they run the world, and that women are 2nd class citizens. It's engrained in the way we raise our own children and how girls are treated at a very young age in school, on the playground, at jobs, etc. Just today, I saw a ...more

I wish I could be as articulate as she is. Reading the essay felt like a validation of the experiences I've lived through since childhood but people said I was 'overreacting', 'too emotional', 'looking for injustices where there are none'.

A strong woman, a strong feminist stating her arguments in a succinct essay about why we should not only call ourselves feminists but be proud of the name.
She really focuses on our hidden and embedded biases. One example is a wife thanking her husband for changing a diaper, THEIR child's diaper. I don't see any problem with that (we should all be a little more thankful for the help of others) until I think about reversing the tables and imagine a husband thanking his wife for changing a diaper. ...more

so short and relevant. also almost everything she said about how women are treated could apply to people of color. and she gave great examples.
i especially liked the example she gave of her male friend's eyes being opened. he was not a sexist but he wasn't a feminist either. he didn't actively fight or protest the way things are until it was pointed out to him.
kinda like how if there are two of us at the customer service desk if one is a male the customer will 99.99% of the time ask the man the ...more

I picked this up the other day when Jeffrey and I tried out a new bookstore in West Duluth (Zenith Books. Lovely shop with so many delightful finds on the shelves). It's based off of Ngozi Adichie's TedX talk. This pamphlet of a book was a quick read and speaks to me. Inclusive. I aspire to be a feminist who lives and loves freely.
