Anthony Doerr is the kind of writer who teaches me how to write as I read his fiction. In this WWII novel, Doerr creates two equally compelling protagonists: a blind French girl and a brilliant German boy. This beautifully written book that intertwines the stories of two people - French Marie-Laure and German Werner - growing up during World War II melts off the pages. The language is so poetic that one can read it for the sound of the words alone. Nevertheless, it is also a haunting story that will make most readers grip the edge of their seats. I highly recommend it.
