What Members Thought

Unlike many, I was never forced into reading this book while I was in high school. I read it voluntarily after reading and enjoying Jane Eyre, supposing that the Bronte sisters would share a great deal of literary similarities. I quickly learned that the two sisters not only had different tales to tell, but entirely different outlooks and styles.
To me, Wuthering Heights was difficult to get into--and admittedly, just about over my head. I managed it by reading slowly and taking in only a few ch ...more

Truth be told the first time I ever picked up this book I found it a little daunting and i struggled to read it. This was when I was in year ten and it was in the 'difficult' section of the English reading list that we had been given for the summer. As always I like to challenge myself and decided to have a go at it. Of course I didn't really understand how brilliantly this novel was written until I read it again for my A level studies some four years later.

It took me at least 10 years to actually finish this book. I love classics, but this book was almost torture until the last 30 pages or so. I do not, and probably will never, understand why so many people rave about this book. The only thing that kept me reading it was so I could finally say I'd finished it, after trying so many times.

This book has it all... Love, hate, treachery, ghosts, and redemption. The beginning of the book was a little hard to follow for me simply because I didn't quite understand how the Heathcliffs and Earnshaws were related. All of that information comes in due time, and it is worth the wait.
