Salvation had saved me, but its protection came with restrictions.

This is the new life adorned by young heroine Deuce, as she begins to learn about the sexist and loving roles the new sanctuary Salvation has labeled her. Down in the Enclaves, she was tried as an adult and respected for her abilities at Hunting and Hand To Hand Combat, but now, it's what other's gossip and shame her for. Life in the Enclavs may of consisted of mostly a lie, but at least she still had Fade, as a partner and friend Salvation had saved me, but its protection came with restrictions.

"People try to make sense of things, and if they don't know the answers, they make them up, because for some, a wrong answer is better then none."

Deuce is quick to learn survival comes at a price, one filled with near constant degrading and vulgar complaints from fellow guards, gossip and hurtful words from the other girls, and people who would rather see her downfall, the watch her act unwomanly. Her relationships with three three people who were closest to her, slowly begins to fall away, as Tegen moves away, trying to find acceptance and embracing in her foster family, Doc Tuttle's medical knowledge, proving she can try and be pure and normal in a completely topsided world. Stalker, a close and honorable companion, admits to a greater affection then Deuce is willing to spend, causing a rift between them. And lastly, comes Fade, her love and lover for the shortest time, his kisses her kryptonite before he too drifts away during a summer patrol Deuce fought so hard to become. This was when so many were lost in the battle against the undead, when Fade and his Tent Mate, were taken in the middle of the night, straight in the mist of eighteen others, proof of the Freak's gaining intelligent.

Once before, they destroyed the winter's harvest, before forcing the growers and guards to make a quick and early harvest to save what they could, before the Freak's lunged, dropping sixteen guards, including her mentor, and close companion Karl Longhorn. After risking everything for Fade, leading to the death of two sickened guards and Stalker's injuries, they make a gruesome discovery, one nobody ever saw coming.

The broken ones don't stop hurting people; they fed on the pain.

This was the sickness that corrupted Miles, from day one, waiting til Deuce had her back turned away and separated from Stalker before striking, yet he fell fool to Deuce, who plaid him straight into her own hands with a ploy of submissiveness. What Stalker and Deuce found, was a camp of Freaks, one with fires, and a pen. A pen filled with humans, included Fade, who's face was nearly unrecognizable, leaving the only way for Duece to know who it was was by the six scars ion his wrists. This is when he fell silent and distant, breaking everything off with Deuce, instead falling into solitude, only helping her foster father Edmund with Shoe Making. Momma Oakes, was who led Deuce's heart astray, as she showed her something she never understood or knew she wanted, a mother's unconditional love.

I believed love hadn't weakened me or left me soft; instead it made me powerful, determined beyond belief.

After Longhorn's death, he left to Deuce everything he ever owned; hos home, possession even his traveling maps. As Elder Bigwater slinked from the shadows, he offered Deuce an important offer, one she couldn't refuse. Leave and get help, and become a hero, because he knew, more so then any other, that chance of survival was slim with the Freak's surrounding them, fire at the ready with the ammunition depleting faster then could be produced. With the help of Stalker, Tegen, and most shockingly of all Fade, they set out underneath the tunnel's of Salvation, determined to be the savior to all that was lost in a town nearly too good to be true. A fatal leaf fallen in paradise.

I saved you, Fade. Why do you hate me? Maybe that's why. Because you made him live with it.
