The heroine of NOT QUITE A HUSBAND, lived among the Kalasha people for a while. The Kalasha are the last pagan tribe in the Hindu Kush mountains. They live a pastoral life of goat herding, supplemented by small scale farming. Among the Kalasha they believe they are descended from the soldiers of Alexander the Great. A dirt track in the Himalayas, much like the ones my hero and heroine travel, as they make their way out of the mountains Tirich Mir is the tallest peak of the Hindu Kush, beautifully prisitine in its glacier-covered summit. Thankfully my hero and heroine don't have to scale it, but from Chitral Valley, where they started their journey, they would have had a fabulous view of it as they looked back. Photo by Dave Watts, used by Flickr Creative Commons license. As my hero and heroine come down from the Kalasha Valleys, they enter into the wide and fertile Chitral Valley. In 1897, the British have two garrisons in Chitral Valley, one in the city of Chitral itself, one in Drosh, 20 miles to the South. From here Leo and Bryony go south, following the Chitral River, until they start climbing again to get out of the valley at Lowari Pass.
