So much to comment on! I think I'll make this first comment just on the other books that have been mentioned. I also haven't read The Beast Within, so will have to add that to my TBR list too. Anything Beauty and the Beast will always go on my list. Unfortunately, I seem to keep forgetting that I have that nice tool here on Goodreads! I absolutely LOVE the Percy Jones series and the secondary series that goes along with it. As Rachmi stated, the first set is the closest retelling of Greek mythology I have found, and the second set throws in the Roman side. I also really like his Egyptian series. Hmmm, someone would get the impression that I like Rick Riordan's writings. lol Honestly, he is one author that I generally buy his new book as soon as it is released. Never heard of The Story Sisters either, so going to have to check that one out.
Only gotten to chapter 4, but am enjoying the tale so far. I agree with Heidi in the fact that the society does have a "Hunger Games" feel.
I'm so glad that we did choose to read this and that everyone seemed to enjoy it so much. I loved it, mainly because of all the depth and surprising details.
That statement about the father/daughter relationship being a love story really stuck with me too, Ally. Enjoy, Diane!
I agree that dealing on the "what if" is probably romanticizing and possibly questioning prior decisions. I honestly don't regret any decisions I have made, and admittedly have had very little serious loss at all, but I do still occasionally wonder "what if". My "what ifs" usually involve career decisions or places I live or have lived in. Not any major heart breakers. I agree that Tiger Lily definitely romanticized Peter, to the point that although she seemed to recognize his faults, she always made excuses for those faults. He was her first love, and I have heard many times that you never really forget and always seem to look at that relationship with "rose colored glasses". I do not agree with this sentiment since I quickly recognized that my first love was not healthy for me and moved on. Tiger Lily, however, seems to follow the pattern. All in all, it was a very good book with, as you say, a lot of depth. The depth of personalities and conflicts actually surprised me and that make me appreciate the tale even more.
I actually finished Tiger Lily about a week ago, but got busy again and almost forgot that I hadn't posted a comment! I totally agree with what Heidi said in her spoiler. That was one thing that really struck me about the final part of the book. Another thing that struck me was the fact that no matter what happens in life and how happy we are, as humans we always seem to wonder "what if". I feel that this is much of what Tiger Lily is thinking about as she stares out to sea - what would her life be like if she had got on the ship and went to England? Rachmi, I had thoughts along the same line about the foreigner. Not quite the white men taking over the Native American land, but unfortunately throughout history many missionaries have subjugated natives in other lands and required them to completely give up their own culture.
I agree with you, Heidi! Although I am reading it much slower than you, I too loved the insight on the pirates, both Smee (very different take than expected) and Hook. I also appreciate the other characters in the book, especially Tik Tok (love his name!) and the crows are such an interesting twist.
I started Tiger Lily today and although I only managed to get to chapter 3, I am loving it! So very cool that it is Tiger Lily's story as told by Tinkerbell.
Finished Cloaked yesterday and totally enjoyed the entire book. So many tales were touched upon. I also liked all the different relationships represented - siblings, parent/child, male friendship/rivalry, male/female friendship and turning into a couple. The book clearly represents my firm belief that the best romantic relationships start with a firm friendship.
Sorry about not joining the conversation sooner. I am actually only slightly over half way through, but am enjoying reading Cloaked. I had listened to it as an audiobook a few years ago and enjoyed it then. I love all the variety of tales that are included or referenced in subtle ways.
I'm actually only a little over half way through Cloaked, since I couldn't start it until Shanna was finished and then we got really busy for a few days, and I had to finish the other book I was reading. I'm pretty bad about only reading one book at a time, especially if they are the same genre. I will hopefully be able to finish Cloaked soon and start Tiger Lily next week.
I did realize there was a kindle version after all when I went to buy it, but the paperback was actually less expensive and easier to share, so went with that. We moved many times too (military) but the books were always the first packed and unpacked, other than essential dishes. Admittedly, there were a lot less in earlier years. Now I have to have my own books, which are many and very diversified, curriculum books, Rick's (my hubby) books, books for Alex (my grandson) to read, ones for me to read aloud to him, and ones for him to grow into, especially the classics. I also have many of my daughter's books on my shelves.
Oh, forgot to say buying used is great, but I actually had credit so got the paperback free. Since both my daughters and myself will read it, I think it was a good use of my credit.
Mindy, I could never get by with just 4 bookcases. lol I am fortunate enough to have a room in my house designated as a library. It has 4 floor to ceiling bookshelves, three other half shelves and one wall mounted shelf, all filled to overflowing. We have a small 3 level shelf in the hall for books borrowed from the library, and naturally books on every table in the entire house! The one thing my hubby has never complained about me buying is any kind of book. He contributes to the book collection himself, but not nearly as much. We made an agreement when we got married that I could buy unlimited books within reasonable price, and he could do the same with tools. His collection has proved much more expensive than mine, even when my collection has been expanded by buying books for our daughters. I am blessed that then the shelves start getting too full, he just asks where we can fit another one.
There isn't a kindle version of this one and the library here doesn't have it, so looks like I will buy it too and that way my daughter gets to read it as well. I listened to this in audiobook form a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so don't mind buying this one.
