82746 So Bill is rec'ing “Committee Study of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Detention and Interrogation Program” by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Here's a direct link to the pdf of the Report ::

One might(?) expect a report on the Report from Vollmann himself (?); a Part Two perhaps to his thing on surveillance pub'd in Harpers last Summer(?) I can only imagine Bill's level of disgust with these unAmericans.

82746 A review of this, Bill's most unreadable* book ::

"The Center Did Not Hold" by Dava Sobel
NYT: February 26, 2006

"Vollmann's own darkness and self-abnegation seem to have made him forget that, whatever he may think of his hero — he criticizes him for laxity, lack of originality, "ghastly syntax" and "prose of incomparable dreariness" — Copernicus has hardly faded into oblivion. Yet, as Vollmann makes clear, non-mathematicians have good reason to avoid reading the actual text of the great man's admirable legacy"

*Clearly, the fault of the big C ; Bill did what he could I'm sure.....

82746 "We have a couple of interesting exhibitions that cover an array of topics coming up in the next couple years. In 2015 we'll be mounting a major show featuring the manuscripts, photography, and archival materials of noted American author, William T. Vollmann (whose literary archive we hold), and in 2016 we'll be curating exhibitions celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of our William Charvat Collection of American Fiction and focusing on our substantial Highlights for Children archive. Further afield is our upcoming fall 2017 exhibition commemorating the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation."

82746 Just want to bump Daniel's offer a few comments above. He's for realsies!

63 bucks is still pretty steep, but when you need the crack you need the crack....

And again, thanks for dropping by with this offer, Daniel.

82746 um, yes! I'll be in touch.

and just on a technical note, can you give us some bona fides of sorts so we know you're not an internet troll, which is unlikely and everything ; claiming your gr author profile, for example, would authentic :: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

82746 One of those indulgent pieces where a person describes their relationship with Bill and his books. Might be worth the skim ::

"On William T. Vollmann: An Indulgence" by Justin Taylor
November 3, 2014 --:
http://electricliterature.com/on-will...

Concluding para begins, "All of this is a prelude to discussing the one thing that truly did—does—surprise me about my reunion with The Rainbow Stories, and that thing is Vollmann’s extraordinary, indeed exquisite, sense of control. What I as a young enthusiast took for pell-mell freedom and chaos is in fact the result of careful orchestration and staging, within individual stories and in terms of the collection as a whole. This doesn’t mean...." and I cut it there because it's one of those "of course there are flaws" comments which I find tedious and pandering all the time...

82746 amazon tells me "December 19" ; but they give me no shipping/arrival date which I take to mean that they don't know yet if they'll have it in stock and shippable condition at that time. Fingers crossed.

82746 And an ESPECIAL thanks to MALA who puts her neck on the line for Our Bill and His Books (and Dolores!), suffering the slings and the arrows of a miserable and cruel world!!! Double that appreciation to MALA!
Dec 03, 2014 12:58PM

82746 amazon still lists the pub date as the first. But they've got no shipping date for me. The publisher has no further info. You can be sure I'll quote my amazon=shipment email when the time comes ; as if we can wait for that!

Dec 02, 2014 02:51PM

82746 Ah shucks guys I just wanted to say thanks to you all ; but so I'll just add a "you're welcome" and "it's been and continues to be a supreme pleasure" ; didn't really mean to get all sentimental but even and especially on a day like today there's nothing wrong with a little sentimentality.

I've still got my fingers crossed that that volume of Vollmann criticism will ship this week.

82746 Hey guys! Just wanted to say how much I appreciate all you fellow Vollmanniacs!!

Kickstarter? A thing like that? You know, the impression I got when I spoke with Bill was that it sort of hangs on McSweeney's. Who's talking to Eggers?

More than photocopying would be involved. The thing is riddled with errors and there'd have to be a whole 'nother editing team to hack it back into shape, reset the whole thing ; hopefully add another vollume maybe.

Meanwhile, anyone find it on one of those torrent sites yet? The review=copy sent out to various reviewing entities was in cd-rom format....

You make an excellent point! McSweeney's is non-profit, right? No? If so, a simple exchange of grant moneys or something.

If you've got the time, you might want to click on "comments" : I saw Michael Hemmingson in there somewhere, self-promoting a thing.
