@jupiter:

The night had been pretty uneventful for Nick Hawthorne. For starters, he'd arrived alone, pulling up in his old truck with just a flask of Captain Morgan in hand. Most of his friends had opted to ignore their invitations, and though he'd known that by the time he chose to RSVP, he'd thought the night wouldn't drag too much.

He'd been wrong.

The halls were crowded, filled with people that he either didn't recognize or pretended not to, and as he stepped into the dining room, he realized it was no different there either. Passing by a large group of people by the door, he looked around the large room. Maybe one of his friends had shown up for the hell of it, or maybe there was something interesting he could do — spike a punch bowl or something.

Scanning, he caught a couple pairs of curious eyes, probably some people who were wondering why he was even there. Me too, he thought to himself before he realized that one person was staring right at him. One person that he definitely recognized, whether he wanted to or not. His teacher.

Shit. His right hand quickly moved behind his back, trying to hide the flask before it was noticed. He took several steps backwards into the crowd of people he'd just passed by. It didn't really hide him. Past the heads, he could see the teacher's eyes, fierce and burning one thought into his mind: You're so fucked.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NICHOLAS HAWTHORNE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━

▴ confident, intelligent, honest | ▾ cocky, contentious, brash

Nicholas has always been smart. From a young age, he was always at the top of his class, excelling in all areas of math and science. It made sense considering his mother was a successful doctor and his dad was an engineer. It made sense that the sciences would practically flow in his veins. But not only was he good at school; he also loved sports. His father played football as a kid, and when he enrolled Nick in it, the young boy fell in love. Football became his life, and when high school rolled around, he made the team as the star running-back.

At the end of his freshman year, Nick's mother came down with a sickness. At first, it seemed minor, but eventually, it grew worse and his mom finally realized what it was: Leukemia. The family tried everything, but nothing seemed to be working — not the chemotherapy, not the donations, not the prayers, nothing at all. A couple months later and he'd lost his mom completely. Nick took it hard. He quit football and his grades started to drop. He stopped hanging out with his friends and started going to random parties. His relationship with his dad has been rocky since then, and even in his senior year, they're still not on the same page. Nick doesn't know if they ever can be.

Haeun almost felt bad. Not really, but almost, you know? After all, this girl was willing to lead her to a bus-stop that was definitely out of her way for no reason other than the kindness of her own heart. What a saint. The world could probably use more people like her, and if the world was different, Haeun would probably have wanted to be this girl's friend.

But this wasn't that world.

As the girl pointed out the bus-stop, Haeun's eyes grew intense, a slight red shade taking over their previous black. Fangs, long and sharp, came down from over her teeth. They peaked out from down-turned lips and dark expression, but as she opened her mouth in something like a growl, they were on full display. She acted fast, lunging at the other girl, ready to tear teeth into flesh.

Skye was getting a bit nervous. A lab was something she definitely didn't want to do by herself. She might have thought mastering chemistry wasn't important in the grand scheme of things, but her parents definitely did. Skye didn't intend on being regulated to her house for a week because she didn't pass the next test.

Oh, thank god. She breathed a sigh of relief as the other boy slid next to her. She knew his name — Bryce — even if she didn't know much else. She'd seen him around the school every once in a while (after all, it wasn't a very huge school) and while they'd never talked, she thought she remembered one of her friends talking about him. He was popular, right? She looked him up and down. He looked like he was.

What am I even thinking?

She gave Bryce a friendly smile. "Heyyyy. I'm Skye." She realized he might have already known her name and added: "I don't know if you knew that already, but, yeah, hi." She drew her attention to the lab instructions the teacher had just handed out. "Also, I suck at this." She motioned to the paper. "So I am really sorry in advance." Honesty was the best policy, right?

Well, that was easy, Haeun thought to herself, giving a warm "thanks so much" as the other girl stood from the table. She walked a few steps behind, picking up her pace to walk beside the other girl as they stepped outside. It was dark and fairly chilly outside the diner, dim streetlights just barely lighting the quiet street. Haeun couldn't see any sign of people besides the occasional car that passed along on the highway a street over.

"Haeun." She didn't mind giving the other girl her real name. Yeah, there probably wasn't anyone else in the town named Haeun, but it wasn't like she planned on leaving the other girl with enough blood to survive the night. And even if she did, it wasn't like anyone would believe her. Officer, she's a vampire, I swear. Yeah, right.

"Really, thanks for showing me the way," Haeun started, keeping her pace just a bit slower than the other girl's, as though she didn't already know exactly where they were going. "Most people would probably have just told me to find it myself." She wasn't lying. Most of the time, she had to come up with some other way to get a person's help. Sometimes she'd have to pretend that she was new in town and definitely didn't know the way around, but this time was easy. "I really appreciate it." And she did.

What a drama queen, Skye thought as she watched Minhyuk give the gym teacher another one of his doctor's notes. She was shocked her eyes hadn't rolled out of her head yet. "Morning," she replied and then started on with the usual teasing. "You're actually so dramatic, Min. It's not even that cold outside." Despite her jabs, she couldn't help the smile that rose on her lips.

Slowing her jog even further, she took a peek at his coffee cup. She gave a fake frown, pretending to be offended. "And you didn't even get me any? I see how it is." Truthfully, she hated coffee. It was hot and bitter and not at all something she would want to wake up with in the morning. She was sure Minhyuk knew about that, but it was still fun to badger.
